Saengerbund means singing society or singing organization. Formed in 1858 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the Lehigh Saengerbund chorus is the oldest continuously operating chorus of its type in the Lehigh Valley and one of the oldest in the United States. We are proud of its heritage and quality.
Our mission is to cultivate and strengthen German-American cultural heritage and traditions, strengthen family bonds and provide a fun and rewarding social and educational atmosphere for members and guests.
Chorgesang - choral singing
Our chorus of over 50 members is talented and growing, ranging in age from teenage to seniors. Under the capable leadership of our director, Edward Milisits, our repertoire includes both German and American classical, traditional and contemporary songs. We humorously refer to our repertoire as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Bier.
Our music includes classical numbers from all the great German composers. We add in the traditional music, songs that many of our senior members sang while growing up in Germany. Then we include some traditional and contemporary American music; such as spirituals, jazz; show tunes. To round out our repertoire we like to sing our festival songs; the kind of music you need to sing while drinking a Bier. That’s what we do at our festivals and various activities; so join us and have some fun. You don’t need to speak German to participate. We teach you German pronunciation and provide you with lyrics and translations.
Our chorus performs two major public concerts each year; our Frülingskonzert (Anniversary Concert) in spring and our Weihnachtskonzert (Christmas Concert) in December as well as performing at a number of smaller events throughout the year. Our 2010 Oktoberfest at the Allentown Symphony was our first performance at the Symphony.
Our chorus is the oldest activity within our organization. The desire to perpetuate our cultural traditions through choral singing was one of the primary reasons the Lehigh Saengerbund was formed. If you are familiar with German customs and traditions you realize that music has always been an important part of German life. Whether its classical, traditional or festivals, singing German and American music is both safisfying and enjoyable.
Please consider joining us - we welcome you (Wilkommen).
